ADULT: Wingspan 36-45mm. Pale brown forewings with darker somewhat burnt patches around the margin, a dark crested thorax, dark tornal mark and the grey hindwings that are streaked with darker veining should give away the identity of this moth. Beware of melanic forms. CHRYSALIS: Pupates within loose cocoon around plant roots. LARVA: Overwinters in this stage. Feeds on various grasses. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light, sugar and nectar rich flowers. HABITAT: Dampish areas such as fens and scrub where foodplant is abundant. FLIGHT PERIOD: May - July. STATUS: Common throughout. |
